July 31, 2002, St. John, New Brunswick -- Wednesday afternoon between 4 and 5:30 (depending on the state of the Bay of Fundy), five kayakers will arrive at Market Slip in the Saint John Harbour as part of their five month trip around the entire coast of the Gulf of Maine. This trip began in Cape Cod in May and will conclude at the end of September on Cape Sable Island.

On Thursday, August 1, ACAP Saint John will host a public meeting at 7pm at the Saint John Regional Library with the Gulf of Maine Expedition Team. Atlantic Coastal Action Program is a broad based, non-profit organization for the sustainable development of St. John's harbour and its estuaries. At this time, the Team will provide a slide show of their experiences to date and is looking forward to input from our community. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

The Gulf Of Maine Expedition was organized to raise awareness and caring about the ecology and culture of the Gulf of Maine. Their records capture a snapshot of the Gulf as it is today, providing a unique perspective for monitoring in the future. Their website, www.gomexpedition.org, is updated several times a week to provide an evolving virtual documentary with an active route map, images from the Gulf, observations, and journal entries.

The Gulf of Maine Expedition was made possible by the generous financial support of Maine Sea Grant, Maine Coastal Program, Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment, and the New England Biolabs Foundation. Additional equipment and financial support has come from Necky Kayaks, Kokatat, U. Maine Cooperative Extension, and many other businesses and individuals.
